Have you ever heard the quiet voice of God in the midst of
your dreams? Or did someone point you
toward God? Where and when do you hear
the call to follow Jesus?
The first reading this Sunday, from the first book of Samuel
chapter 3, is often found in religion text books for children. Samuel hears the voice of God, but he is too
young to recognize it. His teacher and
mentor Eli recognizes the voice, and directs Samuel what to do. How many of us hear God speaking to us in the
silence of our heart, but fail to attend to it?
We often need someone else to point us in the right direction.
The Gospel reading, John 1:35-42, portrays the call of
Andrew and John differently than the other Gospels. John the Baptizer points out Jesus as the
“Lamb of God.” Andrew and John follow
him on John’s testimony. Peter follows
Jesus because of his brother Andrew’s Testimony. One believer shares with a friend who becomes
a believer.
Each day we may have opportunities to be led to Jesus by
others. Each day we may have the
opportunity to bring others to Jesus. John
the Baptist points Andrew to Jesus, Andrew brings his brother Peter to
Jesus.
John the Baptist must have been very convincing. His followers, Andrew and John, must have
trusted him very much at that point. In
turn Peter was convinced by Andrew’s testimony, and Peter must have trusted his
brother very much.
This makes me wonder.
If I pointed the way to Jesus, would I be convincing to others? Have I lived my life in a way that people
would believe that it is a life touched by Jesus?
